THE RIVER NITH SOCIETY

Well, it may have been a rather wet period but this doesn't seem to have dampened the spirits of our Society. We've had a very busy time and there is quite a bit of news to report

Painting competition

Our June event – the Painting Competition organised by the Vennel Traders – was a great success. Artists could choose a location along the river from Kingholm Quay to Lincluden Abbey and over the three days there were altogether 79 entries. First prize, top right, was won by Jenny Smith with her painting of the pedestrian bridge near the swimming pool. The 2nd prize, bottom right, was won by our Secretary and Treasurer, Andrew Grindall with this watercolour painted at Kingholm Quay.

Another contribution by our Society was a gift by one of our members who wishes to remain anonymous. This was a donation of £50 for two prizes to be awarded to very young artists, one for a girl and one for a boy.

Proposed new footbridge

There is a proposal for a new footbridge across the river as part of the Town Regeneration Programme. It would be from the Whitesands, down from Bank Street to Millbrae on the Maxwelltown side. I have written to those concerned asking to be kept informed on this matter. In his reply to my letter Jon Mengham, of the Planning & Environment Services, said:
“the proposals are only at their vaguest and there is unlikely to be any progress in the near future. Should firm proposals come forward I will be happy to keep you informed.”

Society Member
on TV

Committee member Luke Moloney, who had entered the Painting Competition, was interviewed by Border ITV who were doing a programme about the Nith. As far as we know this is to be shown in early August. I don't have a definite date so keep a keen lookout for it. We are also looking at an idea put forward by Luke regarding the possibility of making greetings cards of some of the entries. These would be for sale to help us with funds for the Society

New committee member

We've been very fortunate in co-opting member Betty Jardine to our committee. Welcome Betty and thank you.
