THE RIVER NITH SOCIETY

Newsletter May, 2010

The local press has been full of exotic pictures of figures dressed in fantastic and colourful costumes all as forecast in previous news letters about The Tide Machine at Kingholm Quay and presented by the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Association. It was nothing like anything I had ever seen on the river before and luckily the weather was on the organisers side. For children brought up on DR Who it must have been a breeze not to jump into the water to escape the strange creatures. Some seemed thrilled despite the strangeness of the mime figures. I think the excellent design elements would have benefited from a clearer narration of the happening. The Society's first outdoor event of the year will be up river at Ellisland Farm to continue the artistic and literary theme.
There can be few more romantic siteswhere nature is extolled by poettry Arguably the finest narrative poem ever written was born here, Robert Burns 'Tam o'Shanter'.

The party should meet at the car-park at 2pm on the 1st of June. Stout walking shoes are recommened for the walk to the Hermitage and a stick. If you require a lift contact A Grindall on 01387 247866 so that some arrangement can be made. Let us hope we won't need an umbrella.
