THE RIVER NITH SOCIETY

We have been lucky with our Society's summer events in that we seem to have dodged the heavy rainfalls. Our walk in June at East Cluden led by member Tommy Jardine was a wonderful, sunny experience and equally our visit to the Caerlaverock Wetlands Trust in July

was a memorable one led by the very knowledgeable Brian Morrell, the Learning Manager there. In August, the walk was at Drumlanrig which, so far, is the farthest afield that we've explored our river. Since it's 70 miles long – we have a lot of exploration ahead of us!

For the moment, however, we are heading indoors preparing for our autumn and winter programme.

Journey Down the Nith: David McNay, Senior Officer for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is giving an illustrated talk for the Society on the Agency's role in looking after our river. He will be looking at the work involved in safeguarding against pollution and maintaining the purity of its water.

Venue and time: St. Andrew's Church Hall, Brooke St., Dumfries at 2.30pm on Tuesday September 16.

Come and bring your friends – everyone is welcome. No entrance charge.

QUESTIONNAIRE:

In the next few days I shall be contacting members to see if they can help with a questionnaire regarding the Exhibition Boards. Dates have not been set mainly because of the unsettled weather. I shall be in touch.

OTHER NEWS:

I have informed the committee that, after much thought, I have decided to stand down as your Chairwoman. If you wish I shall remain in post until our AGM early next year.My reasons for this decision are twofold. First, on a personal level, I must put my health and that of my family first – we really have not been in the best of health recently.Secondly, I feel that having been in the post for two years it is

P.T.O.

time for the Society to have a change. There is always a need for a fresh approach and fresh ideas which someone else can bring to the post.

It has been a great privilege to be your Chairwoman and I thank you for your support and putting your faith in me. I think in the relatively short time that the Society has existed we have made remarkably good progress.

I shall, of course, remain a member of the Society.
